Humanoid robot
fighting: the guide

Two human-shaped robots, two pilots, one cage. Here is how a humanoid robot fight works, from the machine to the knockout.

What is a humanoid robot fight?

A humanoid robot fight pits two human-shaped robots, with two arms and two legs, against each other in a closed area. Each robot is controlled live by a human pilot. The aim is close to that of a combat sport: hit the opponent, send it to the floor, stay standing. It is also called robot boxing.

The sport first grew in the United States and Australia. FCL brings it to France.

Who controls the robot?

A human. The robot does not decide to strike on its own: the pilot chooses movement, guard, strikes and when to throw them. The robot handles its balance and carries out the moves. So the fight is won on the pilot's reflexes and strategy as much as on the machine.

Pilots control the robots from outside the cage. They can be athletes, gamers or content creators. The become a pilot page explains how to join the league.

Which robots are used?

FCL uses Unitree humanoid robots. They are about the size of a teenager and can walk, dodge, strike and get back up on their own after a fall.

As in motorsport, a tech crew makes repairs between bouts. A damaged arm or a broken part is replaced before the next fight.

How does a fight unfold?

The format borrows the codes of combat sports: pilot introductions, robots entering the cage, rounds, and a winner. A robot on the floor that does not get back up loses the round or the fight. FCL's detailed rulebook will be published before the first gala.

At a gala, fights follow a fixed order: undercard with the league's pilots, creator fights, then the main event for the French title. The details are on the gala format page.

Robot Wars, BattleBots and humanoid robots: the difference

Shows like Robot Wars or BattleBots pit wheeled machines, often armed with blades, saws or flippers, against each other. The fight ends when a machine is destroyed or immobilised.

A humanoid robot fight is different: the robots stand on two legs and box. Balance becomes both a weapon and a weakness. The show reads like a boxing or MMA bout, with dodges, counters and falls, and a human fighting through the machine.

Is it dangerous?

Not for the crowd: the robots fight in a closed cage and spectators are kept clear of the fighting area. Pilots are not in the cage. Only the machines take the hits.

Where can I watch a robot fight in France?

The first FCL gala takes place in Paris in January 2027. The Riviera series follows in summer 2027 in Nice, Cannes and Monaco. The full calendar is on the robot fighting in France page. Every gala is also streamed live on Twitch, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.
